Students want ‘dead day’ resurrected

Students want dead day resurrected

In the chaos that is the end of a semester, many students find it difficult to regroup and prepare before final exams begin.

During some semesters in the past, the University held a study day before final exams. This day was between the last day of classes and the first day of exams.

Students could use this day of no classes to study for their final exams or just take a long-needed break from the final days of school.

On “dead day,” as some students called it, teachers were available to help students with any questions or problems they may have had before the exam.

Depending on how the end of the semester falls, we do not always have a “dead day” each semester.

We at The Nicholls Worth think that dead day should be resurrected and made sure of each semester.

The final days of school before exams are often filled with last minute information, cram sessions in class and deadlines for class work. All of these academic responsibilities begin to pile up, creating added stress for students who must study for exams and tend to whatever other obligations they may have, such as work and family.

Final exams begin after the last day of class without a weekend in between these two days. Students have worked hard all semester and have so much information to study in the days before exams.

It is unfair to the students that they could be taught new information for a class the day before final exams begin. For example, if a student is enrolled in a 3M class, and the teacher introduced new information on the last day, May 2, these students would be at an extreme disadvantage because the final exam for all 3M classes is the following day.

Without dead day, students do not have the opportunity to seek extra help from their teachers.

Both students and teachers deserve to have a day to dedicate their extra time to prepare for finals.

The administration should carefully consider doing what it takes to make “dead day” a priority for the benefit of students and teachers.
