Tuition increase necessary for benefits

A bill recently endorsed by the Louisiana House Education Committee could potentially force students to fork out even more money for higher education.

House Bill 448, sponsored by State Representative Hollis Downs, R – Ruston, would allow colleges to charge students for 15 hours, in comparison to the 12 hours they currently charged for. Legislators in support of the bill say removing the cap would allow universities to charge more to full-time students, therefore generating more money.

    But is this necessary?

With no other option currently on the table, the simple answer is yes. With higher education experiencing budget cuts of more that $310 million dollars since 2008, it has become apparent that it is time to do something to recuperate from these devastating blows. Representative Downs has offered the House a way. It is now their choice to run with it or not.

Even though Nicholls students may soon be faced with this tuition increase, it is necessary to prevent further cuts within the University. If classes are cut, graduation for some students may be prolonged. Other students may not have the option of obtaining their intended degree.

If the money gained from the increase is used wisely, it could possibly prevent the University from future devastation due to budget cuts.

Before the tuition increase, the bill must go to the House floor for debate where it must receive two-thirds support from both the House and Senate.

While no student wants to see an increase in tuition, it will be beneficial for both universities and students.
