Connor Waalk, a Houma native, hopes to represent the spirit of Nicholls State University through his candidacy for Mr. Nicholls. Known for his friendly personality and strong involvement on campus, Waalk believes leadership begins with building meaningful connections within the university community.
Waalk said he chose to attend Nicholls because of the close-knit environment that allows students to build relationships with faculty while growing academically and personally. The university offered something unique compared to larger schools.
“I wanted to attend a university where I could have one-on-one experiences with my professors and a community that would push me to be a better student and person,” Waalk said.
“Nicholls, in my opinion, is the best place to foster a community of kindness plus a fellowship to be the best version of oneself.”
Waalk describes himself as someone who values kindness and everyday interactions with others. He believes even small gestures can make a difference in someone’s day.
“I am a very friendly person,” Waalk said.
“I live by the statement that everyone has a voice and deserves to be heard and seen. I strive to talk to everyone, even with a little hello or a quick ‘how are you doing?’ Those little gestures can slowly change the world into a happier place.”
Outside the classroom, Waalk spends much of his time focusing on fitness and athletics. He enjoys working out and recently started running at night as part of his routine. Baseball plays a major role in his life. Waalk enjoys both watching the sport and coaching youth baseball through the Louisiana Baseball Association.
His involvement on campus continues through leadership roles. Waalk currently serves as vice president of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity, which previously earned a place on the university’s Homecoming Court. Both experiences represent some of the proudest accomplishments of his college career.
After graduating, Waalk plans to continue his education by attending Physician Assistant school. His long-term goal centers on returning home to serve his local community.
“My goal after I graduate is to attend PA school,” Waalk said. “After PA, I want to come back to my community and help by working as an orthopedic or surgical Physician Assistant.”
Waalk says his decision to run for Mr. Nicholls comes from gratitude for the support and community he has experienced at the university. He hopes the position would allow him to give back while representing students across campus.
“I decided to run for Mr. Nicholls to show my love for the community that Nicholls has given me.”
Waalk often reflects on a Bible verse that motivates his dedication to growth and discipline.
“No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness plus peace for those who have been trained by it.” (Hebrews 12:11)
