Black History Month Celebrations Highlight Culture and Community Across South Louisiana
Black History Month is observed each February across the United States to honor the achievements, contributions and struggles of African Americans throughout history. In South Louisiana, more specifically in the Thibodaux area, several events and historical moments are highlighted in the local community’s strong connection to African American heritage and the ongoing celebration of Black culture.
One of the most anticipated community events in Thibodaux is the Essence of Black Celebration hosted at Nicholls State University. It is held in the Student Union Ballroom, this annual event brings together students, faculty, local residents and visitors to celebrate the cultural impact of Black Americans. The celebration features live music, cultural resources, food vendors and artistic performances that reflect the richness of Black history and tradition.
Another major highlight in the area is the Celebration of Black Excellence, which takes place in the parking lot next to Ellender Memorial Library. This event showcases the accomplishments of African Americans through music, art and community engagement. A crowd favorite is the stroll-off competition featuring step teams, which emphasizes the importance of Black Greek-letter organizations and their influence on African American culture. Both events are free and open to the public, making them accessible opportunities for community members to engage with and honor Black history.

Nicholls State University continues its Black History Month programming from Wednesday, Feb. 21 through Thursday, Feb. 29, by offering African American–themed cuisine at the Galliano Dining Hall, located at 906 East First St. in Thibodaux. Meals are served beginning at 10:45 a.m., allowing students and guests to experience cultural heritage through food.
Beyond Thibodaux, other surrounding parishes host events recognizing Black History Month. Meet the World Image Solutions invites you to laugh loud and celebrate culture at the Black History Month Comedy Night, on Friday, Feb. 20, from 7:30 pm to 10:30 pm CST at Café Istanbul in New Orleans. As part of the Black History Month Literary Weekend, this grown-folk comedy experience features The Greek Comedy Tour, bringing together a range of talented comedians for what’s sure to be an unforgettable night. This celebration of Black excellence is an experience you won’t want to miss.
