Opinion: The ultimate guide to the best king cakes in New Orleans

With Mardi Gras in full swing and king cake cravings at their peak, here’s a look at NOLA’s top contenders for the best king cake.

In an attempt to answer the age-old question of where to find the best king cakes, I’ve rounded up the top bakeries in the city that strike the perfect balance of flavor, tradition, and price.

(Apologies in advance to any Rouses king cake fans—while convenient and affordable, this grocery store version sadly did not make the list.)

1. Haydel’s Bakery

Self-proclaimed as the “most delicious king cake in NOLA,” this beloved New Orleans staple is renowned for its consistent quality and impressive variety of stuffed king cake flavors.

While their cakes are on the pricier side, ranging from $60 to $80, the rich and indulgent fillings—like strawberry cream cheese and German chocolate—make it well worth the investment.

2. Manny Randazzo’s

While not technically located in New Orleans, this bakery is a favorite among locals and has earned a reputation as one of the top places to get king cake. Situated just outside the city in Metairie, these king cakes are known for their pillowy soft texture.

The price range is the same as Haydel’s, unless you opt for the super king cake costing a little over $100 with a measurement of 40 inches.

3. Dong Phong Bakery

Located in New Orleans East, this Vietnamese bakery offers a twist on the classic king cake. The non-traditional bakery has gained popularity and a loyal following in recent years, so much so that it produces about 1,200 king cakes per day during the Mardi Gras season.

With a more affordable price of $25, you can buy the “traditional” unfilled king cake or try their durian filled option for $30.

4. Bywater Bakery

Famous for their refreshing chantilly cakes, this bakery has a variety of king cake flavors and fillings. Bywater Bakery offers everything from their chantilly inspired king cake to a bourbon cinnamon flavored vegan option.

For those who prefer something less sweet or simply want to try something adventurous, you can still get into the spirit of the season with their boudin stuffed king cake.
