Students of Nicholls State University created a petition to extend the Harold J. Callais Recreation Center’s hours of operation.
Nicholls’ rec center is open from 6:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. on weekdays and 8:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. on weekends. However, some students are unhappy with these hours. As a result, a student-led petition was created.
Student Government Association [SGA] Vice President, Lance Jones, said that student government was not made aware of this petition until two weeks after it began circulating on campus. An exact date of when the petition surfaced cannot be determined.
“In return to the petition, I countered with a town hall meeting to give students direct access to administration,” Jones said.
Administration did catch wind of this situation.
Dr. Michele Caruso, Vice President of Student Affairs, said that a student at the SGA town hall stated they initiated the petition. However, she is unsure of the student’s name and whether or not the petition is still spreading across campus.
“We always appreciate students using their voices productively through channels and tools, such as SGA, designed for them to express their perspectives or needs,” said Caruso.
For future petitions, Caruso recommends viewing Article IX, Section Two of the SGA Bylaws.
