THIBODAUX, La. — The McNeese Cowgirls erased a double-digit halftime deficit and used a dominant second half to defeat the Nicholls State Colonels 69-59 on Thursday night in Southland Conference women’s basketball action at Stopher Gymnasium.
Nicholls controlled the early momentum, feeding off its home crowd and strong defensive play. The Colonels jumped out to an 18-11 lead after the first quarter and extended their advantage to 34-22 at halftime behind efficient shooting and rebounding.
But the game shifted completely after the break.
McNeese came out aggressive in the third quarter, pushing the pace and forcing turnovers that turned into fast-break opportunities. The Cowgirls exploded for 29 points in the third quarter, quickly erasing the deficit and taking their first lead since the opening minutes of the game.
McNeese’s comeback was fueled by several momentum-changing performances: McNeese guard (No.3) sparked the rally with consecutive transition layups early in the third quarter, cutting the Nicholls lead to single digits. McNeese forward (No.24) delivered a powerful and-one finish in the paint that gave McNeese the lead and shifted momentum fully to the visitors. With under four minutes remaining, McNeese guard (No.11) knocked down a clutch three-pointer from the wing, extending the Cowgirls’ lead to double digits and sealing control of the game.
McNeese’s defensive pressure forced multiple turnovers during the second half, allowing the Cowgirls to dominate in transition.
Despite the loss, Nicholls State showed strong performances throughout the night: Nicholls guard (No.10) opened scoring with a deep three-pointer and added a steal-and-layup sequence in the first quarter. Nicholls forward (No.22) controlled the glass early, scoring several second-chance baskets that helped Nicholls build its halftime lead. Nicholls guard (No.5) hit a key mid-range jumper late in the fourth quarter to bring the Colonels within single digits.
The decisive stretch came midway through the third quarter when McNeese went on a sustained scoring run fueled by defensive stops and fast-break execution. After trailing by 12 at halftime, the Cowgirls outscored Nicholls 47-25 in the second half to complete the comeback victory.
McNeese WBB strengthens its position in the Southland Conference standings heading toward postseason play, while Nicholls State looks to regroup as it continues its push toward the conference tournament.
