In the heart of downtown Thibodaux, The Bead Hive stands as a reflection of its owner’s creativity and love for community.
Joy Lindley, a Nicholls State University graduate with an associate degree in nursing, never imagined she would one day run a gift shop filled with handmade treasures. What began as a personal passion soon grew into a thriving small business.
“I started making jewelry, and I needed an outlet to promote my jewelry, so I opened this gift shop,” Lindley said.
After graduating from Nicholls in 1979, Lindley pursued nursing, a career rooted in caring for others. Yet her creative side continued to call. Jewelry-making became not only an outlet, but an opportunity. Opening The Bead Hive allowed her to combine entrepreneurship with her love of artistry.
For Lindley, the true turning point was realizing how much she enjoyed connecting with others.
“I love socializing, so meeting new people was always very interesting and enjoyable to me,” she said.

That love of people now shapes the atmosphere inside her store. Customers are greeted not just with shelves of handmade items, but with conversation and a sense of belonging.
What sets The Bead Hive apart from other shops is its dedication to small-scale, handcrafted goods. Lindley focuses on unique, handmade items and caters to what she calls a “local cottage culture,” a style that reflects the charm and creativity of the community. The shop offers pieces that can’t be found in big-box stores, giving customers something personal and distinctive.
Though the shop is small, Lindley emphasizes that running it requires significant time and effort.
Behind the welcoming storefront is the daily work of stocking merchandise, assisting customers and maintaining the business.
When it comes to hiring, Lindley looks for qualities that reflect her own approach. She values honesty, a personable attitude and a genuine love for working with people.
“I would look for someone who is honest, very personable and loves being around people,” she said.
More than a store; The Bead Hive is a space built on creativity, connection and community spirit. Through her journey from nursing graduate to small business owner, Joy Lindley has created a place where handmade artistry and heartfelt interaction come together in downtown Thibodaux.
