Nicholls baseball falls in conference opener

THIBODAUX – The Nicholls State University baseball team lost to the University of New Orleans 4-1 in its Southland Conference opener on March 22.

Nicholls drops to 17-8 overall and 0-1 in conference play with the loss.

Edgar Alvarez went 3-4 at the plate and added an RBI on a sixth-inning home run.

Starting pitcher Jacob Mayers was relieved in the seventh inning after throwing 116 pitches. Mayers struck out 12 batters and gave up three hits and one run.

The game went scoreless for the first five and a half innings until Alvarez hit a home run to right field to give Nicholls its only run in the bottom of the sixth.

UNO scored three runs in the seventh inning and followed that up with a one-run eighth inning.

Nicholls continues the conference series on Saturday. at Ray E. Didier Field. 

First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
