After an 8-0 loss, the Nicholls State University softball team remained unfazed, picking up a 4-1 win over the Stephen F. Austin University Lumberjacks in game two of Friday’s doubleheader.
The Colonels had trouble getting the bats going in game one, picking up only three hits. They brought five or fewer batters to the plate in each inning.
Second baseman Claire Sisco’s triple in the fifth inning was the only scoring threat for the Colonels in game one, but a flyout from pinch hitter Lilly Robledo in the next at-bat ended the scoring opportunity.
Fittingly, Sisco made the difference for the Colonels on offense in their game two victory, picking up a hit, a HBP, a walk and two runs in four plate appearances.
Sisco’s dominance at the plate helped put points on the board, but the Colonels pitching staff carried them to victory, recording a near shut out.
Starting pitcher Molly Yoo (5-4) finished with two innings pitched and one run allowed.
The outing may come as a relief for Yoo, a second team All-Southland Confernce preseason selection, who struggled through non-conference play, giving up four or more runs in eight of her nine games pitched heading into Friday’s game.
Reliever Sierra Oullette (2-1) picked up the win after pitching the final five innings, a season high. She retired 14 of the 18 batters faced, struck out one and conceded zero runs.
It is Oullette’s first shutout over multiple innings pitched since joining the Colonels this offseason.
The Colonels will look to take the conference opening series in the final game on Saturday at 9 a.m.
