While attending college, a vast majority of people live on campus in dorms. I wanted to share with you some tips and tricks to make living in a dorm a little easier.

     •  Make use of the vertical space

In a dorm, you may not be given that much space to store some of your belongings. A good way to fix this issue is by investing in some over-the-door racks. What this will do is allow you to store more items in a confined space.

  • Use command strips

Command strips always come in handy when trying to give your dorm some more personality. These allow you to hang stuff on the walls like pictures, posters and decor. They can make your space feel more like  home by adding your personality to the walls.

  • Use a foam mattress topper

A mattress topper is something that is a must-have because the beds that come with the dorms are somewhat rough or uncomfortable. Adding a foam mattress topper lets you get a better night’s sleep and helps prevent back issues.

  • Buy two laundry baskets

This may seem like a no brainer, but you would be surprised by how many people forget about this until later in the semester. Having two laundry baskets allows you to separate clothes and towels to help you stay organized. Even though some people may just wash everything together, it isn’t such a good idea. When you pack the washing machine, not everything ends up as clean as it should be.

  • Keep food fresh

Make sure to have some airtight storage containers to put your food in. This will allow you to keep your food fresh longer, and they give your food storage. These containers also allow you to be able to eat leftovers instead of having to go out and buy food.

  • Use scented wall plugs

Since you aren’t allowed to have candles in the dorm room having a wall plug or two will allow your room to smell good and eliminate bad odors.

  • Buy a rug

Having a rug allows your room to look cleaner and better organized. The carpets in the dorms are not always the best looking since they were first installed many years ago. This will also make your room seem homier and inviting whenever you have guests over.

  • Get a whiteboard

Make sure to get a whiteboard and hang it in the entryway. That way you and your roommate can both write messages that help you keep each other on the loop of what’s going on. You can write what groceries you need from the store, or you can write to each other some little notes that put a smile on their face.

  • Buy paper products

Being a college student means you barely have time for anything. Having paper products like paper plates and towels will help you save time in order to keep everything clean, instead of having to wash everything over and over again.

     •  Buy microwavable meals

Having microwavable food comes in handy because it allows you to limit the times you’ll want to go out and get food. This also lets you enjoy a perfectly good meal from the comfort of your dorm, especially on those days where you don’t feel like getting out of bed.

I hope some of these tips can help you out in making your dorm a more enjoyable place to live. I know it can be tough living in such a confined space, but it gets better with some tricks!
