Women’s basketball looking to get back to winning

Nicholls State University women’s basketball team look to begin another winning streak following their overtime victory against the University of Central Arkansas this past Saturday.

The Colonels rebounded from a nail-biting three point loss against Northwestern State University, who still resides as the number one team in the Southland Conference, by beating the Central Arkansas Sugar Bears just three days later.

Nicholls’ freshman guard Tia Charles broke the second tie of the second half at the 12:39 mark with a three-pointer that brought the score up to a 46-43 lead. The remainder of the half was a back and fourth game resulting in four ties and five lead changes. The Colonels shot a season high of 58.3 percent.

The team traveled to Conway, Arkansas to take home their third straight win against the Sugar Bears, leaving them with a 3-4 Southland record. The win was the Colonels’ second overtime victory of the season and improved the teams overall record to 8-10. They currently hold a 4-3 record and a 6th place in SLC standings.

“The UCA game gave us a lot of confidence. Of Course we wanted to win the Northwestern state game, but we didn’t execute the way we needed to. Coach gave us our confidence and kept talking to us, and that’s what really pushed us through the UCA game,” Charles said.

The Central Arkansas game was offensively led by senior Shay Arnick with a career high of 18 points for the second consecutive game. Though Arnick scored the most points, it was the duo between Charles and junior Emani White that led the team to the 11-point lift to victory. Charles finished the game alone with 15 points and 6 assists. She had a game high of 18 points and a total of 142 points. Charles is the second leading scorer for the Colonels behind senior Jenny Nash, who also has a team high of 18 points and 233 total points.

With determination and focus, the team wants to begin their second winning streak today against the University of New Orleans Privateers. The Privateers have a current overall record of 2-14 and SLC record of 0-7.

“Those like Thursday’s game are always tough games because they are when we seem to settle and ease off. We just need to stay focused and locked in,” Charles said.

The game will be the beginning of a five home game stretch for the Colonels. A match with University of the Incarnate Word will follow the UNO game.
