Soccer looks to build on shutout win against Southern

The Nicholls State University women’s soccer team is looking forward to their last few conference games after a 2-0 win against Lamar University this past Friday.

The Colonels traveled to Beaumont, Texas to play the Lamar University Cardinals. After a failed attempt to clear a shot from Spencer Valdespino, Cardinal goalie Bailey Fontenot reflected a ball off her teammate, resulting in the first goal of the game for Nicholls. Emily Werenskiold assisted the final goal of the game by Jess Coates, after a corner kick from Kaylie Daniels.

“That was a fantastic game! It was really big for us because we were 2-2 in conference at that point, so we made it clear before starting warm ups that this was going to be a big turning point in our conference. So far, we haven’t been doing exactly what we wanted to in conference,” Ainsley Pratt said. “We knew that if we played Lamar to the best of our ability, we would come out with a win. It was not only a good moral booster to become 3-2 in conference, but also a big confidence booster.”

The Colonels will travel to Baton Rouge, Louisiana this Thursday to play Southern University. The Jaguars have a record of 2-8. Sunday, the University of Central Arkansas will travel from Conway, Arkansas to the soccer complex. The Bears have a record of 5-6 overall.

“We know that Southern is probably not going to be the best game. Central Arkansas will be a big game to see where we end up going into conference play. We only have three or four games left before the conference tournament. It will be a really big momentum shifter, and we know it’ll be a really tough game. Moral is just such a big part of where we go from here on out,” Pratt said.

Nicholls will try to fix small errors this week in practice. They look to keep the momentum of winning going into the tournament. The Colonels’ goal is to make their presence known not just for the entire team, but for the seniors who didn’t have that luxury their entire careers.

“We want to come into conference play not just on luck, or be the team everyone thinks will be an easy game. We want to be a team that people pay attention to because we haven’t really been that in the past. We want to come in with a purpose.”
