In a game defined by momentum swings, defensive stands, and rivalry intensity, the Nicholls Colonels came up short against the Southeastern Lions on Thursday night in the annual River Bell Classic. Southeastern pulled away in the fourth quarter to secure a hard-fought win of 38-26 and reclaim the River Bell Trophy.
Nicholls started off slow with a fumble by QB Ean Rodrigue early, which Southeastern quickly capitalized on a sustained opening drive that ended. But the Colonels answered back with a short touchdown run. The Colonels’ defense held strong through much of the first half, forcing multiple punts and keeping Southeastern’s offense off balance. But a late second-quarter scoring drive by the Lions shifted momentum, sending Nicholls into halftime with a narrow deficit.
The second half turned into a defensive battle, with both teams trading stops and field position. Nicholls threatened with a long third-quarter drive, but a red-zone turnover ended the Colonels’ best chance to retake the lead. Southeastern responded by stringing together back-to-back scoring drives in the fourth quarter, stretching the margin and putting the game out of reach.
Despite the loss, Nicholls showed grit throughout the matchup, highlighted by strong rushing production and standout play from its linebacking corps. However, turnovers and missed opportunities ultimately made the difference in a rivalry game where small mistakes are magnified.
The defeat closes out Nicholls’ regular season and marks another intense chapter in the storied rivalry between the Colonels and Lions.
