THIBODAUX – The Nicholls State University baseball team lost its sixth straight game after a 12-11 loss to the University of New Orleans on Saturday.
The loss drops Nicholls to 17-9 on the season and 0-2 in conference play.
Shortstop Parker Coddou went four-for-six at the plate, adding three runs and an RBI.
Nicholls and UNO traded runs in innings one and two, tying the game at 1-1 going into the third inning.
UNO scored two runs in the third, both coming off of a double. Nicholls responded with four runs, including a Narvin Booker Jr. solo home run, to take a 5-3 lead.
Edgar Alvarez blasted a two-run home run in the bottom of the fourth to give Nicholls a 7-3 lead.
UNO scored two runs in the top of the fifth and added a third in the sixth inning to cut the Nicholls’ lead to 7-6.
Nicholls responded with two RBIs from Coddou and Aaron Biediger, taking a 9-6 lead.
Two three-run home runs in the ninth inning helped UNO take a 12-9 lead going into the final half inning.
Nicholls’ comeback attempt fell short despite Cade Crosby’s two-run home run in the bottom of the ninth.
Nicholls head coach Mike Silva said his managment decisions may have been to blame for the loss.
“I thought our kids went out there and threw the ball well tonight,” Silva said. “When it comes to a six-run inning, I gotta be better at managing the bullpen in those situations.”
Nicholls looks to avoid a second consecutive series sweep in game three on Sunday.
First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Ray E. Didier Field.
