Rodrigo starts her sophomore album heavy with a 2000s reminiscent rock ballad in “all-american bitch.”
Starting the song off with the line “I’m as light as a feather and stiff as board” almost transports the listener into a teenage girl sleepover scene in an old movie or television show.
She softly floats through the next few lines before the song quickly turns into a rebellious teenage girl’s pop-punk anthem as she shouts the words, “I forgive and I forget, I know my age and I act like it. Got what you can’t resist. I’m a perfect all american bitch.”
Rodrigo then returns to the soft ballad she began with, but only for a couple lines before indulging her listeners back into the anthem she had just given a taste of.
In the second coming of the anthem she shouts,”I know my place, I know my place. And this is it.”
This signifies her desire and the desire of other teenage girls to feel that they belong and their longing to not be viewed as the dumb little girls society pretends they are at times.
Rodrigo delves back into the slow dream sequence ballad she began with and ends with the words,”I’m pretty when I cry.”
This shows the selfish narcissistic tendencies she and other young woman can have because of the torment society has put upon their shoulders while also shouting a big f*** you to that society to allow them to feel a sense of confidence because they do have control over themselves.
This was one of my favorite songs of the album because it set the tone of what was to come and blended the album nearly perfectly into one song.
