Update:

Lindsey McKaskle, interim athletics director, provided us with a statement on the future of Nicholls State University athletics for this semester.

“Due to the ongoing concerns regarding COVID-19, the Southland Conference and its member institutions made the decision to cancel the men’s and women’s Southland Conference basketball tournament today.  This decision was not made lightly, but was necessary given the current climate.  We are incredibly disappointed for all of our student-athletes, but especially our seniors.  This was a difficult way to end their careers, and we will forever be grateful to their contributions to Nicholls State University athletics.

“Additionally, the Southland Conference member institutions made the decision to cancel all conference and non conference competitions through the end of March.  As of right now, our teams will continue practice activities.  Again, this was not an easy decision, but we have to put the well-being of our student-athletes, coaches, staff and fans first.  Their health will always be our number one priority.  We will reassess the situation in the coming days.”

Original Story:

Today, it was decided that all Southland Conference sporting events, both conference and non-conference, would be suspended from now through March 30.

This morning the Southland Conference announced that it will cancel the remainder of the Southland Conference Tournament basketball games due to concerns about the coronavirus.

Both the women’s and men’s basketball teams were supposed to be competing in the games.

In the next few weeks, conference and campus administrators will meet to discuss what will happen when athletics resume and any other issues.

The Southland Conference stated in a press release that it will not bar athletics from practicing, but that such would be left to individual universities’ decisions.

On Monday, March 16, Nicholls State University will be having a test day for online classes. Any lab classes will continue to meet as originally scheduled. Tuesday, classes will resume as normal for the time being.
