Editor,
I am disappointed in the column “Geekly Weekly.” Donny Blanchard’s reviews are too vague, and don’t convey meaningful information about the titles he reviews. He doesn’t seem to have a consistent rating system, either – at the end he just assigns a number without any explanation of how exactly he reached that number. Furthermore, a simple “game review” column is slightly insulting – the game industry is a vast and varied one, and on a campus where many students are pushing for a video game development degree, I feel there is more to cover than just one-shot game reviews. Will it cover Sony’s unveiling of their next portable system? Or Activision’s ongoing unethical business practices? Or even in-depth topics like how games are made? What about the growing surge of commercially-successful independent game titles? These are topics that are important to people who want to enter the games industry, and across many majors there are a lot of students who wish to do so. Lastly, I am disappointed that the column has been relegated to the “Web Exclusives.” I thought the article had entirely disappeared at first, before checking your website. I feel that a video game column could easily be worthy of print inclusion, but it has to be more than just a simple, flawed review system first. If it improves, it would surely attract those with an interest in the medium to the paper. Not to sound egotistical, but I know my industry. Feel free to contact me if you want any ideas for topics about video games and their industry. Games are more than just playing Call of Duty.
