THIBODAUX, La. — The Nicholls State Colonels delivered an offensive showcase Tuesday afternoon, defeating The Dillard University Blue Devils 16–2 in a run-rule victory at Ben Meyer Diamond and Ray E. Didier Field.
Nicholls controlled the game from the middle innings onward, using timely hitting and aggressive base running to pull away and secure the decisive win. The Colonels finished with 11 hits while capitalizing on key scoring opportunities to overwhelm the Blue Devils.
Big Inning Breaks Game Open
After a competitive start, Nicholls exploded offensively in the fourth inning. The rally began when Andy Miller delivered an RBI single to score the go-ahead run, sparking a scoring surge. Shortly after, Karson Irvin added an RBI single and later stole second base to keep pressure on the Dillard defense.
The inning continued to unravel for the Blue Devils as Casey Artigues laid down a bunt single that drove in another run, followed by an RBI hit from Caston Thompson, extending the Colonels’ lead to 8–2.
Offensive Leaders Shine
Nicholls’ offense stayed hot in the fifth inning, turning the game into a rout. Irvin highlighted the frame with a clutch double down the right-field line that brought in another run. Moments later, Noah Detillier delivered one of the biggest plays of the day, a two-RBI single that also led to an additional run scoring on a defensive error, pushing the lead to double digits.
Key offensive performances included:
- Andy Miller – multiple RBI hits and sparked rallies
- Karson Irvin – RBI single, RBI double, stolen base and strong baserunning
- Noah Detillier – two-RBI single that broke the game open

Pitching and Defense Hold Firm
Nicholls’ pitching staff shut down Dillard’s offense after early scoring chances. A pitching change in the fifth inning immediately paid off as the Colonels retired the side, including back-to-back strikeouts looking to halt any comeback attempt.
Dillard was limited to just two runs as Nicholls pitchers consistently worked ahead in counts and forced weak contact throughout the later innings.
Turning Point
The turning point came during the fourth inning offensive explosion, where Nicholls strung together consecutive productive at-bats. The combination of small ball, aggressive baserunning, and timely hitting transformed a close contest into a comfortable lead that Dillard could not recover from.
