THIBODAUX, La.- Nicholls point guard Michael Gray Jr’s 25-point performance off of the bench jolted the Colonels men’s basketball team after a sluggish offensive start.
Nicholls extended their win streak on Monday, Feb 3 to three game with a 75-67 win over Houston Christian University .
The Colonels went into the locker room at halftime down 38-27. The Colonels shot a woeful 27% from the three point line
Nicholls head basketball coach Tevon Saddler identified great coaching from the Huskies as one of the biggest reasons for the Colonels’ halftime deficit.
“We versed a well coached team, they came out and punched us in our mouth. We started out,” Saddler said.
The Colonels came out of the gates strong in the second half shooting a well improved 52% from the field and 44% from deep.
Coach Saddler gave praise to his team’s leaders for lighting a fire in their teammates after a disappointing first half.
“I think it was less about me,” Saddler said. “I got so many great leaders in that locker room; I was proud of our leaders getting the guys in line.”
After his 20-point performance in the win over McNeese on Saturday Gray Jr. added five threes in his 31 minutes on the floor.
Jamal West Jr. contributed to the comeback with a double-double, recording 14 points and 13 rebounds.
Huskies’ guard Bryson Dawkins led his team in scoring with 21 points. Dawkins slid into the point guard role after Elijah Brooks went down with an apparent Achilles injury in the first half.
The Colonels won handily at the freethrow line going 18-23 against the Huskies’ 6-10.
The Colonels extend their home stand with a matchup against East Texas A&M University on Saturday at 3 p.m.
