Nicholls State University baseball advanced into the winner’s bracket of the North Oaks Southland Conference Baseball Tournament to face Southeastern Louisiana after defeating Texas A&M – Corpus Christi 14-2 on Wednesday.
The mercy rule ended the game in the seventh inning. For those unfamiliar with college baseball rules, according to baseballscouter.com, “A mercy rule automatically ends a game before the final out of the final inning has been made due to a large run differential. Most mercy rules are implemented when a team is winning by 10 or more runs.”
The run rule came thanks to Nicholls’ five-run sixth inning that saw all nine of the Colonels’ batters take the plate,
The Colonels took ten at-bats in the inning with leadoff batter Drake Anderson, who hit a home run on the first pitch of the inning, taking two at-bats.
Nicholls also saw 10 at-bats in the fourth inning, scoring four runs in the inning. Lead-off hitter Edgar Alvarez ended the inning after striking out.
Alvarez led all batters with three hits, three runs and three RBIs in four plate appearances.
Colonels’ starting pitcher Jacob Mayers matched his season high in innings pitched with six. Mayers ended the game with six strikeouts, four hits allowed and one earned run.
