THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University baseball team walked off Lamar University 5-4 in the 11th inning on May 10.
The win improves Nicholls to 31-18(13-6). The Colonels now sit one game behind Lamar with five games remaining.
Drake Anderson hit the game-winning home run in the bottom of the 11th inning, his only hit of the game.
Anderson said it was exciting for him to win the game like that.
“I tried to get out there and do everything I [could] for the team and I did,” Anderson said.
Nicholls head coach Mike Silva said he couldn’t be happier for Anderson.
“He’s not gonna forget that one,” Silva said. “Walk-offs in that situation are special.”
In the first inning, a fly ball to right field advanced all three bases, scoring Edgar Alvarez and giving the Colonels a 1-0 lead. Alvarez recorded two hits in three at-bats.
Lamar held a 2-1 lead in the fifth inning, but a Cardinals’ fielding error that scored Kaden Amundsen tied the game at 2-2.
In the seventh inning, the Cardinals took a 3-2 on a sacrifice fly that scored Austin Roccaforte.
Narvin Booker Jr. tied the game, 3-3, with his third home run of the season in the bottom of the seventh.
Nicholls took a 4-3 lead in the eighth after MaCrae Kendrick’s solo home run.
Lamar’s Tanner Wilson scored on a ground out to second in the ninth inning, tying the game 4-4.
Starting pitcher Jacob Mayers struck out 10 of 16 batters in his four innings of pitching.
