SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Nicholls State University women’s basketball team got back in the win column with a 65-59 victory over the University of the Incarnate Word on Thursday, Jan. 18.
This win over UIW is Nicholls eighth win of the season, and its second in conference play, bringing its overall record to 8-9 and conference record to 2-3.
The win snapped a two-game losing streak for Nicholls, coming off of losses to conference foes Lamar and New Orleans.
Freshman guard Britya Curtis scored eight points for the Colonels in the first three and a half minutes and started off a 10-0 run midway through the first quarter.
The 10-0 run let the Colonels to 22-14 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Nicholls scored only five points in the second quarter and trailed by one at halftime, but an early second quarter shot by UIW’s Nina De Leon Negron was overturned after it was determined the shot was not taken before the shot clock ran out.
The overturned shot gave Nicholls a 29-28 lead going into halftime.
Nicholls did not give up its lead in the second half.
Junior forward Deonna Brister scored 16 of her 19 points in the second half.
Three Colonels scored double digits in the win, including Brister, Curtis, and senior guard Kyla Hamilton
Brister led the team in scoring with a season-high 19 points. Brister added five rebounds, one assist and two steals on the night.
Curtis tied her season-high in points with 18, and recorded two rebounds, three assists and two steals.
Hamilton scored 11 points and led the team in assists with a season-high of seven. Hamilton ended the game with four rebounds and a steal.
Nicholls continues its Texas road trip on Saturday against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 1 p.m.
