MOBILE, Ala. – The Nicholls State University women’s basketball team defeated the University of South Alabama 61-58 on Monday, Dec. 4.
Nicholls improves to 6-4 with the win.
Sophomore forward Lexi Alexander scored a career high 25 points and lead the team in points, rebounds, assists, and steals.
Alexander shot 8-19, recorded eight rebounds, four assists, and two steals. Alexander shot 9-10 from the free throw line.
Junior forward Deonna Brister and freshman guard Betzalys Delgado recorded two steals, tying for the team lead.
Senior guard Ashley Malone came off the bench and scored 11 points, and recorded four rebounds and one assist.
Nicholls held a 7-6 lead with two and a half minutes left in the first quarter before South Alabama went on a 8-0 run to end the quarter with the lead, 14-7.
The teams’ went back and forth in the second quarter, before Nicholls took a five point lead with 2:33 left in the half.
Nicholls held a slim 26-24 lead at the end of the first half.
South Alabama went on another 8-0 run midway through the third quarter and held a nine 45-36 lead at the end of the third quarter.
After three South Alabama points Malone went on a 8-0 fourth quarter run narrowing the deficit to four in just over two minutes.
Nicholls went on a 8-0 run to take a 56-55 lead with 2:02 left.
South Alabama tied the game after, but with 1:16 left, Brister hit a three pointer to give Nicholls the lead.
Alexander shot two late game free throws with 33 seconds left, giving Nicholls a three point lead.
Nicholls returns home on Saturday Dec. 9 to face the University of Alabama-Birmingham.
Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Stopher Gym.
