Nicholls volleyball sweeps two-game series against Texas A&M-Commerce for second conference win

Nicholls volleyball has limped through conference play enroute to 1-13 conference record heading into Thursday night’s game.

Nicholls had a renewed sense of optimism entering the match against Texas A&M-Commerce,  the only team Nicholls has beaten in conference play.

A&M-Commerce’s five game losing streak started with a 1-3 loss to Nicholls on Oct.19 in Thibodaux, La.

The five game losing streak became six games for Commerce after a 3-1 Nicholls win.

Freshman Gracie Campbell had another stellar outing for Nicholls notching her sixth double-double of the season

Fellow Freshman Deniz Akgul had a coming out party with a career high 14 kills.

Set one belonged to Commerce early after it stepped out to a 4-0 lead on after blocking a Gracie Campbell attack.

An 8-3 Nicholls run tied the game up at 19, but Nicholls did not have enough fire power towards the end of the set.

Commerce took set one 25-22.

Stacking points would be Nicholls’ key to victory in set two.

13 of Nicholls 25 points came directly after a score.

Autumn Perry led the team to the 25-23 set two victory recording three kills and two service aces.

Paris Dixon picked up a kill that pushed Nicholls out to a 6-2 lead early in set three

Nicholls continued its streaky play and took 13-7 lead.

Campbell led the team in set three with seven kills.

Akgul followed close behind five.

The output of the two powered Nicholls to a 25-17 win to take a 2-1 lead.

Commerce looked like they would force a fifth set after taking a late 18-13 lead.

Nicholls fought back to take a 21-19, but Commerce stuck around and forced a 23-23 tie.

Nicholls stifled a Commerce block to take a 24-23 lead and forced a Commerce attack error to end the set in a 25-23 Nicholls victory.

Nicholls is back in action against Lamar on Saturday in Beaumont, Texas.
