Games to look out for in 2020

The worst part of every new year is finally here: sitting and waiting for everything to come out. If you haven’t been checking the internet like a crazy person, waiting for something like everyone else, I’ve compiled a list of things that are being released this year. Hopefully, you’ll find a game that has you on the bandwagon, too.

As of right now, Nintendo has already exceeded my expectations. Animal Crossing New Horizons on March 20, Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX on March 6, Xenoblade Chronicles for Switch, Bayonetta 3, Metroid Prime 4 and Breath of the Wild 2  are the announced games for this year, but who knows what else Nintendo has planned.

Animal Crossing New Horizons is most likely the game I’m going to pick up and never put down this year. Just the fact that I’ll have an animal crossing game for the switch makes me want to skip. I can already imagine curling up in a blanket on a sunny day and doing virtual manual labor chores for fun that I could very well be doing in real life.

Along with an incredible lineup of games for 2020, Nintendo has also announced downloadable content for their already successful games. The Super Smash Bros Fighters Pass #2 is something that genuinely had me jumping for joy when it was announced. With five more characters to be announced for Smash, I’m already counting the seconds until the next Nintendo Direct to see who is getting in the game.

The expansion pass for Pokemon Sword and Shield is a childhood dream come true. As a kid, I hated buying the new Pokemon game, then buying it again when they released a better version. Not only is this a cheaper alternative than buying a new game, but it’s also more convenient and seems to be more content than any re-release we ever got as kids.

For other consoles, you can look forward to Nioh 2 on March 30, The Resident Evil 3 remake, The Last of Us 2 on May 29 and Cyberpunk 2077 on Sept. 17.

Out of these, I’m most excited for Resident Evil 3. The Resident Evil 2 remake in 2019 was my game of the year and the best remake I’ve ever played in my life. If the RE 3 remake is half as good, it might still be my 2020 GOTY.

Microsoft also surprised me with the announcement of Minecraft Dungeons, a dungeon crawler similar to Diablo 3. As someone who has sunk over 100 hours in Diablo 3 in the last couple of months, I’m very excited to waste more of my life exploring another dungeon. It’s the perfect game to play with some friends on the couch, too. As we see more and more of a focus on online multiplayer, it’s satisfying to be able to physically punch my friend while playing together.
