The Student Programming Association turned an ordinary parking lot into a live concert hall where dozens of students gathered as R&B sensation Lloyd graced the Alive at Five stage last Friday.
The Alive at Five consisted of free music, games and merchandise courtesy of SPA and other student organizations.
Screams of excitement filled the air as Lloyd serenaded the audience with his soulful voice and seductive charm. His avid dancing ability also caught the eye of the audience as he glided across the stage in a similar fashion of his role model—the late King of Pop, Michael Jackson.
Lloyd, originally from New Orleans, was raised in Atlanta, Ga. where he began his journey to fame in 1996 as a member of the boy band N-Toon. In 2001, the same year the group disbanded, Lloyd began his solo career when he signed to Magic Johnson’s record label, Magic Johnson Music.
Since then, Lloyd has grown into an international superstar working with artists such as Lil Wayne, Nicki Minaj and Ludacris to name a few. Lloyd’s greatest hits include: “Southside,” “You,” “Player’s Prayer,” “Girls Around the World,” “Lay it Down,” “Cupid” and his recent single “Dedication to My Ex (Miss That).”
Being a native of Louisiana, Lloyd said he enjoys any opportunity he gets to visit his home state.
“My favorite place in the world growing up was my grandparents’ house in New Orleans in Ponchatrain Park,” Lloyd said. “Anytime I can even get near that place I just feel at peace.”
If Lloyd was not involved in the music industry, he said that he would jump at the chance to be a taste tester for his aunt.
“She is, like, the best cook in Louisiana. She makes the meanest banana pancakes,” he said. “I could probably just eat those everyday and be happy.”
Lloyd has worked with very creditable artists throughout his career. His favorite artist to collaborate with is none other than Lil Wayne. In the future, he plans to work with hip-hop artist Jay-Z.
Lloyd’s newest album “King of Hearts” is in stores now.
