Tables filled the Cotillion Ballroom on Wednesday, and an array of campus entities displayed themes of all things sweet for Welcome Back Day.
This year’s theme was “Nicholls is the Sweetest Place to Be”, and all participants followed through with various expressions of sugary flavor. Bold colors and decorations set the scene for the rows of tables, displaying themes such as “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory” and Halloween.

Off-campus groups such as Target and Acadia Music Fest decorated tables to join the campus in celebrating the start of a new school year.

Dr. Janice Lyn, dean of student affairs, said Welcome Back Day is both a celebration and a showcase of Nicholls’ community.
“Welcome Back Day is more than just the start of a new academic year—it’s a celebration of the vibrant spirit that defines Nicholls State University,” Lyn said. “As Dean of Students, I want to emphasize how important this day is for reconnecting our campus community, welcoming new students, and re-energizing our shared commitment to academic excellence, personal growth, and Colonel pride.”
Smiles appeared across the room as many groups displayed their Colonel pride through cheer, musical ensemble and even a warm welcome from Thibodaux Mayor Kevin Clement.
Students mingled, participated in table activities and learned more about all Nicholls has to offer. Tillou contributed his own exuberant Colonel pride by greeting many students and faculty with hugs, high-fives and (as always) a smile.
Lyn emphasized the importance of Welcome Back Day for setting a tone of inclusivity and collaboration. She addressed all new and returning Colonels.
“To our returning students: Welcome home. To our new students: Welcome to the Colonel family. Let’s make this year one of purpose, persistence, and pride.”
