THIBODAUX, La. — MaryGrace Ohler will be taking her passion for copy-editing to the next level this semester as The Nicholls Worth’s new incoming copy editor. Ohler is a sophomore double-majoring in history and English, providing her with helpful tools for her role.
Ohler said one of the best aspects of copy editing is being able to see the writer’s article through to completion.
“It is something I would love to do in my future,” Ohler said. “Being able to be a part of that end product of a piece is a whole different feeling and experience. It’s my favorite part of the writing process.”
One of Ohler’s passions is being an advocate for those around her who have disabilities. She grew up visually impaired, and had supportive family members who normalized ensuring Ohler had what she needed. Ohler said her parents encouraged her every day to be authentic to herself.
“Even when I was unable to read the font in a book, they showed me other avenues to keep doing what I loved,” she said.
In high school, however, Ohler said she had to frequently fight for necessary accommodations due to the unawareness of those around her.
“I took my anger and turned it into passion,” Ohler said. “I advocate not only for myself, but for others too.”
Nowadays, Ohler is always striving to make inclusive spaces for understanding others’ disabilities and encouraging them to pursue their dreams. She looks forward to bringing her spirit of inclusivity to The Nicholls Worth and using her skills to amplify her fellow staff members’ voices.
