The Nicholls State University baseball team dropped the last game of the season series against UIW, 4-3,

after claiming the series in game two.

The Colonels threw five pitchers in game three, as opposed to two in the previous game. Luke McGibboney subbed in for Michael Lindsey in the first inning after Lindsey allowed one run and walked batters in 23 pitches.

Koen van’T Klooster replaced McGibboney in the fourth inning following three runs allowed by McGibboney.

Head coach Brent Haring said the team needs to hit the strike box and ensure players get rest.

“We didn’t throw strikes. That’s the whole premise of [pitching],” Haring said. “We’ve got to throw strikes. He (Michael Lindsey) was a little dinged up last week. He didn’t get the extra rest, and that’s my fault.”

Comparatively UIW pitcher Jackson Elizondo pitched nearly the entire game for the

Cardinals. Elizondo had 123 pitches, 3 runs, 4 hits, 5 strikeouts, and a 3.12 ERA. Braelin Pilot

would come in to close the game for the Cardinals with two outs in the ninth, facing two batters

on twelve pitches and allowing one walk.

Nicholls responded in the bottom half of the first after Karson Irvin reached home off an error from UIW second basemen Tyler Cowan, tying the game at 1-1.

Both teams saw a scoring drought in the second and third inning before the Cardinals broke through in the fourth inning with three runs off of four hits:

Nicholls’ Noah Detiller drove in two runs on an RBI double to right field that scored Narvin Booker Jr. and Jaden Collura. The runs shrunk the UIW lead to one run.

AJ Cappell grounded out to shortstop with two runners for the last out, sealing the win for the Cardinals.

Haring said the windy conditions may have affected at-bats after putting up 10 runs the night prior.

“I thought we had good at bats. Especially the first three or four innings,” Haring said. “Tough day with the wind blowing hard. A couple balls might’ve left the yard on a normal day.”
