Colonels take series, look to sweep

The Colonels claimed back-to-back wins and a home series victory over conference opponent UIW with a 10-0 win on March 22

The Nicholls State University baseball team improves to 5-6 in conference play and 10-14 overall with the win

Colonels’ head coach Brent Haring said  his formula to back to winning ways after five straight losses was too attack early and often on the mound.

“Trying to get the at-bat over at three pitches or less,” Haring said. “Really attacking the strike zone and both Alec and Cole did a good job of that tonight.”

Colonels’ starting  pitcher Alec Sparks got the team off two I good start defensively. Sparks pitched the first  five innings allowing two hits and no runs.

“I control the game,” Sparks said. “If I can put up zeros in the first three innings, we can start playing some real ball.”

Cole Simoneaux replaced Sparks in the 6th and continued the lights out pitching, finishing off the shutout with no hits allowed.

The Colonels began hot in the bottom of the first inning, pick up a plethora of hits that saw the entire lineup have an at bat opportunity. Nicholls went into the second inning with a 5-0 lead over the Cardinals.

Teams faced a scoring drought from the second to fourth innings. Karson Irvin broke through the drought for the Colonels with a two RBI single to right field that drove AJ Cappell and Carter Jenkins to score.

Irvin worked himself off the base path too, running home after a Chase Jans RBI single up the middle, earning him the game’s lead scorer mark.

The Colonels added to their lead with two runs in the seventh inning, securing a mercy rule victory.

The Colonels look to sweep the series and even their conference record at 1 p.m. at Ray E. Didier Field.
