Nicholls State University announced Tommy Rybacki as the 11th head coach of the football program on Monday, Dec 1 following former head coach Tim Rebowe’s retirement following 10 years as coach.
“Our goal here will be to play a brand of football that creates a sense of pride for this community and this university[…]When you watch us play, you will see unmatched effort, execution, fundamentals and a never-finch mentality,” Rybacki said in his introductory press conference. “We’ll be a team that is tough to prepare for and that people hate to play.”
Rybacki joined the coaching staff as defensive coordinator in 2015, when Rebowe became head coach, and has held the position for all 10 years.
He thanked Rebowe for shaping him into the coach and person he has become.
“Coach Rebowe, the example that you have set for me as a father, as a coach and as a leader is invaluable,” Rybacki said.
Nicholls’ defense found success under Rybacki’s leadership. It finished the 2024 season ranked third in turnovers gained and 21st in total defense.
Rybacki took a moment to ease the minds of fans worried about the transfer portal, saying he welcomed the changing landscape of college football.
“I am most excited about the work and the challenges that lay ahead. College football is a changing environment and I am excited about that change,” Rybacki said. ”Our job, like any successful organization, will be to navigate that change and find our way in this new recruiting class.”
In his first 50 days as head coach Rybacki said he hopes to stabilize the roster and staff, complete the recruiting class, and begin the offseason training program once classes resume.
“We are going to be relentless and put a team on the field and in the community that this university will be proud of,” Rybacki said in a closing statement.
