The Nicholls State University softball team won twice to complete a series sweep against Texas A&M – Corpus Christi on Saturday.
The win improves Nicholls to 29-24(16-9) and gives Nicholls the number three seed in the Southland Conference Softball Tournament.
The Colonels played a double-header on Senior day winning 7-1 in game one and 1-0 in game two.
Saturday’s wins came thanks to the Colonel pitching staff that allowed only one run in the three game series.
Game one starter Molly Yoo struck out five batters and allowed only one run before Averi Paden relieved her late in the fifth.
Paden allowed no runs or hits and struck out one batter in the save, her second of the season.
Nicholls’ ace Audrey McNeill(14-12) gave up three hits, no runs and struck out seven in her second start of the series.
McNeill said she enjoys providing defensive support for the team.
“Being able to do that for them on my weekend was pretty cool,” McNeill said. “I’m happy for my team and glad that we got the win out of it no matter how many runs were scored.”
For McNeill the victory felt sweeter. Going up against her former team, she said, motivated her.
“I Came from from [Corpus Christi] so beating them and shutting them out twice was pretty big,” McNeill
The sweep comes at the right time for the Colonels as they head into the conference tournament on Tuesday.
“They want to do bigger things than just go to a conference tournament and compete in it, they want to win a conference tournament,” Head Coach Justin Lewis said. “What excites me is that they’re still in it and they want to do better.”
