The Nicholls State University women’s basketball team is heading to Lake Charles for the 2024 Southland Conference Tournament.
This is the first appearance in the tournament for Nicholls since 2021.
Nicholls finished with an overall record of 13-17, tied for the most wins by the program since the 2019-2020 season, and a conference record of 7-11, making them the seventh seed in the tournament.
The winner of the tournament will secure a spot in the 2024 NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament.
Nicholls won the Southland tournament in 2018, giving them a spot in March Madness that year.
In his first year as head coach for the Colonels, Justin Payne said he feels good about the team’s chances in the tournament.
“We’re right there,” Payne said. We’re very, very close. Let’s finish the job.”
Freshman guard Britiya Curtis said she’s ready to win it all.
“That’s all I can say,” Curtis said. “I’m just ready to score points and win as a team.”
Nicholls will need four straight wins in the tournament to win it outright.
The Colonels play against the sixth-seeded University of New Orleans in round one of the tournament on Monday, March 11 at 1:30 p.m.
Every tournament game is broadcasted on ESPN+, with the championship game broadcasted on ESPNU.
