Students gathered in the Bollinger student union last night for a fun Mardi Gras themed movie night.

Nicholls State University’s Student Programming Association [SPA] held a Colonel Gras Mambo Movie Night in the student union which included a showing of Disney’s “Princess and the Frog” in the Le Bijou Theatre.

Along with free Colonel Gras t-shirts, the SPA handed out Mardi Gras beads, green colored water and hot chocolate, gumbo, beignets, and king cake. A line wrapped around the union as students gathered to get their share of the goods.

While plenty of students seemed to enjoy the festivities, some were also disappointed at how small of an event Colonel Gras was this semester.

History major Ellen Carroll said that while she enjoyed the event, she was a little upset that this was the only Colonel Gras celebration this year.

“I wish there was another one, maybe one outside again. I liked the live music,” she said.

As for SPA president Elissa Walker, she found that the event turned out very well and accommodated the early Mardi Gras dates while still giving the students something to celebrate.

“A lot of people prefer to go to parades, and it’s just easier on us as student leaders to put on something like this […] it’s just a kickoff to Mardi Gras,” Walker said.

The event as a whole took place from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. with the movie starting at 6:30 p.m.

My name is Evan Elizabeth Cressoine. I’m a junior here at Nicholls, from Houma, studying creative writing. Above all, I am a storyteller. I’ve been writing all of my life and have always wanted to work for my university’s newspaper. I'm also working on the campus literary magazine, the Mosaic! I love reading, traveling, and despite what AP style has to say about it, I love the Oxford comma.
