DALLAS – Nicholls’ turnover woes led to a 69-54 SMU win on Wednesday, Nov. 14.
Nicholls turned the ball over eight times in the third quarter allowing SMU to outscore Nicholls 25-8 in the quarter.
The loss spells an end to Nicholls’ three-game winning streak, the most wins to start a season in program history.
Nicholls came out strong defensively, giving up only 7 points in the first quarter and 16 in the second.
Nicholls used the defensive battle to take a 26-23 lead into halftime.
SMU came out swinging in the third quarter after falling behind by three points. SMU got out to a 31-26 lead before Nicholls scored its first points of the half.
Nicholls only scored on two more shots in the quarter.
An Ashley Malone layup at the end of the third quarter sparked an 8-0 Nicholls run to begin the fourth quarter, but it was too much to overcome.
SMU outscored Nicholls 21-20 in the fourth quarter to take a 69-54 win.
Freshman guard Betzalys Delgado finished the game just short of a triple-double recording 10 points, 8 rebounds, and 8 assists.
Delgado once again finished the game within the top three of most minutes played with 33, three minutes behind the leader in minutes played, Lexi Alexander.
Alexander and Ashley Malone led the team in points with 12 and 13 respectively.
Alexander added three rebounds to the box score and Malone added a steal.
Nicholls is on the road in its next game at the University of Louisiana-Laffayete.
The game in Lafayette, La. is scheduled to tip off at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 16.
