The annual Alive @ 5 homecoming week event took place at the Harold J. Callais Recreation Center on Thursday Oct. 5.

Alive @ 5 is a campground themed festival held during homecoming week. It’s filled with games, food, club tables and music. The event is held yearly by the Student Programming Association [SPA].

Heaven Guillory, Traditional Events Director for SPA, organized Alive @ 5 this year. This is Guillory’s second year being the head of the event.

Guillory said the importance of the tradition is big for her and for Nicholls State University.

“It’s a nice annual tradition to get students out and party, to show their colonel pride and to have lots of fun,” Guillory said.

“There is usually a bonfire during the event, but due to the statewide burn ban, we were unable to do that. Instead, we did a presentation commemorating the 75th anniversary of Nicholls State University homecoming.”

Guillory said there has been a huge turnout to the week’s events.

“This whole week alone has been phenomenal. We have never seen this kind of a turnout,” Guillory said. “It’s not overwhelming, but we’re very happy and joyful to see the students participating in student life.”

LVVRS played live at the festival for the second year in a row,

LVVRS is a band out of Lafayette, La. They play a mix of pop and rock with original music and covers.

The band is made up of lead vocalist River Gibson, guitarist Lillian Giacona, bass guitarist Edward Pricipato and drummer Brenon Wilson.

Giacona said the band had more energy this year rather than last year.

“It was more of a party this year,” Giacona said. “We had fans that came back from last year, which was so much fun, and now we have new fans from this year. We had fun overall.”

Loud screams could be heard from the crowd at almost every minute.

“It was exciting to see how many people came back to see us a second time,” Pricipato said.

“Good participation, it was a lot of fun,” Wilson said.

“Twas’ a hell of a time,” Gibson said.

All four band members said they would definitely do this again if invited back.
