This year, the Oscars was the topic of conversation for many people. All across social media, fans of movies and music shared their thoughts on this year’s nominations, wins, and performances. The film “Dune” won six Oscars—the most of the evening. Jessica Chastain won her first Oscar as Best Actress for her role in “The Eyes of Tammy Faye.” However, the biggest moments and discussion from the Oscars this year was the incident between Chris Rock and Will Smith.

While doing his on-stage commentary, Rock made a joke regarding Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith. The “joke” stated that Jada was getting ready to star in “G.I Jane 2,” which was referring to when actress Demi Moore shaved her head for the role.  

Following the joke, Jada’s live reaction was shown, and she was obviously upset. Will Smith then took charge and stormed the stage, where he slapped Chris Rock across the face.  Broadcasting in America censored some of what Smith yelled to Rock afterwards.  However, in other countries it was not, and Smith can be clearly heard yelling, “Keep my wife’s name out your [explicit] mouth!” 

Jada Pinkett Smith has been open about her struggle with alopecia, a disease causing hair loss. Rock, however, claims he did not know of her condition, and if he did, would have never made the joke.  

Later that evening, Will Smith won his first Oscar for Best Actor for his role in “King Richard.” Since the incident, the question of whether Smith gets to keep his Oscar remains.  Many think his actions were out of line, therefore does not deserve his award.  Smith has since resigned from the Academy, as well as put all current projects on hold, leaving many wondering what this means for his future. 

Both Chris Rock and Will Smith have apologized for their actions.  Although this was one of the most memorable moments at the Oscars this year, there were many other moments that deserve to be recognized.

Troy Kotsur made history by being the first deaf actor and the second deaf performer to win an Academy Award for his role in “CODA.” His award was presented by Youn Yuh-jung. During his acceptance speech, Youn Yuh-jung stood beside him so that he could use sign language freely during his speech. This became one of the most heart-warming moments of the night.

Another moment deserving of recognition is the film “Dune” having won six Oscars—the most of the evening. Awards won included Best Original Score, Cinematography, Editing, Production Design, Sound, and Visual Effects. 

This year, the Oscars had many memorable moments and has been talked about greatly.  There were some heartwarming moments—as well as shocking—which made for a very interesting award ceremony.
