Xbox acquires Activision Blizzard

Microsoft’s video gaming branch, Xbox, has just officially acquired Activision Blizzard for an astounding $68.7 billion.

Activision Blizzard is most well-known for games, such as Call of Duty, Overwatch, Guitar Hero and World of Warcraft. These games, along with many more, have been increasingly popular over the years with every new release. This acquisition is very monumental in terms of console gaming.

The Activision Blizzard acquisition is a sign of what is to come to the gaming world soon. For one, Microsoft’s acquisition of these properties could mean exclusivity for particular games on the Xbox consoles. While not every game will fall under Xbox exclusivity, it is safe to say that a large majority of Activision Blizzard games will.

However, Xbox CEO Phil Spencer has revealed on Twitter that games, such as Call of Duty, will continue to be available with Sony as per previous contractual obligations and will most likely remain that way.

“[I] Had good calls this week with leaders at Sony. I confirmed our intent to honor all existing agreements upon acquisition of Activision Blizzard and our desire to keep Call of Duty on PlayStation. Sony is an important part of our industry, and we value our relationship,” Spencer said via Twitter.

Spencer has also expressed interest in reviving previous Activision Blizzard franchises, such as Guitar Hero.

Spencer stated in an interview with the Washington Post, “I was looking at the IP list, I mean, let’s go!” He continued, “ ‘King’s Quest,’ ‘Guitar Hero,’ … I should know this but I think they got ‘HeXen.’ ”

Looking at the extensive list of games and franchises that Activision Blizzard has, it will be interesting to see what Microsoft and Xbox will do with these properties going forward. It will also be interesting to see if Nintendo and Sony do anything to compete with Xbox, especially since Sony reportedly lost $20 billion in stock due to the acquisition.
