Thanksgiving break inspires Christmas spirit

Thanksgiving break is next week, but the students and community surrounding Nicholls State University are already setting into the holiday spirit.

Lawns are littered with Christmas lights, the sound of what some people believe to be delightful holiday music is being played on the radio and people have begun to wonder if Thanksgiving is being skipped entirely because of all of the Christmas spirit that is already being seen around town.

Although the week-long Thanksgiving break is approaching, some students are not concerned about that, and are more focused on the month-and-a-half-long Christmas break instead.

Junior human performance education major Brooke Morris is looking forward to Christmas break more than anything because of the length of time off of school and the opportunity to spend time with her entire family.

“It’s absolutely magical when Thanksgiving is skipped and we go straight into Christmas,” Morris said. “People can’t decorate for Thanksgiving anyway so we should just skip it entirely.”

Most students enjoy the transition between October and December because of the nice weather and the different holidays.

While some people say it is never too early to get into the holiday spirit, others feel as though the time in between Halloween and Christmas should be equally as cherished. Thanksgiving is about spending time with your loved ones and eating tons of delicious foods.

“Call me the Grinch of Christmas, but I believe we should get through Thanksgiving before moving on to Christmas, seeing as they fall in that order,” Graduate student Jackie White said. “I understand Christmas is one of the biggest holidays of our society, but putting up decorations and blasting disgusting Christmas music an entire month before is, in my opinion, a little too much.”

Senior Danielle Phillips, management major, believes that Thanksgiving is a time for sharing gratitude with your family and also feels that it is an overlooked holiday because of it being stuck so closely to Halloween and Christmas.

“All of these holidays are being rushed, but it’s important that we all don’t forget about the great deals on Black Friday and sometimes on Thanksgiving day itself,” Phillips said.

The National Retail Federation announced a sharp decline in Black Friday sales and sluggish spending from online shoppers on Cyber Monday as well during the holiday period.

“I enjoy the Black Friday shopping because people get completely out of control and it’s funny to watch,” Phillips said.
