Homecoming Court reflects on the meaning of homecoming

Alumni and students of Nicholls State University come together Sept. 28th through Oct. 3rd for homecoming activities that started with the kick-off and will end with the football game and crowning of the homecoming king and queen.

The true purpose of homecoming is to return to your alma mater to unite with old friends and reminisce on college days with alumni, as well as current students celebrating the university they chose to attend.

Nicholls Alumni Director, Monique Crochet, is excited to host the first Alumni Social which will include the graduating class of 1965, past Student Government Association presidents, and past homecoming queens and kings.

“The exciting part about homecoming is having alumni come back to where they started,” Crochet said. “It’s a great time on campus for the students as well as the alumni because they get to start new traditions as well as see how the other ones have grown.”

Along with the football game on Oct. 3rd, the 2015 homecoming queen and king will be crowned at halftime. Various groups around campus such as soriroties, Nicholls Gay-Straight Alliance, Colonel Catholics, the Honors Program, Circle K, Cheerleading and many more nominated a total of 30 females and 31 males for the court but in the end only 14 students were elected.

Homecoming nominee and one of the five members of Sigma Alpha Epsilon nominated on the court, Marcus Fox, believes that homecoming is an event that reflects the passion and pride shown by this small university and is displayed when alumni get involved with tailgating and the football game. As Fox’s second nomination for the homecoming court he claims to feel much appreciated by his peers.

“Being on court is alone a big honor and something I would never of imagined seeing myself being a part of,” Fox said. “Not being from America it wasn’t until last year that I really knew what homecoming was all about and what it really stood for.”

Stuart Percle is up for homecoming king and is also a member of Signma Alpha Epsilon alongside the female nominee, Camille Comeaux.

“Homecoming is perfect for alumni and the community to reinvest their time into the university as well as it serving as a reminder for all current and former colonels to support the school they are proud to call home,” Percle said. “This week has been one for the record books, and I am so excited to experience all that Saturday has in store for us.”
