The Nicholls State University football team completed their first spring under Head Coach Tim Rebowe last Saturday.

The Colonels used a special scoring system for their annual spring scrimmage. The offense was led by junior runningbacks Tobias Lofton and Michael Henry, accounting for a total of three touchdowns combined. However, it was the defense that capitalized on the offense’s mistakes. The game was decided by two missed field goal attempts and gave the defense a 33-27 victory. Rebowe said he was pleased with the team’s enthusiasm and is excited for the direction they are headed.

“I was pleased with the effort and energy. I loved the enthusiasm that they showed. I thought they came out and competed on both sides of the ball,” Rebowe said. “We do have some things to clean up, but that’s normal. Overall, I am very excited for the direction we are headed finishing up our first spring.”
Freshman defensive back Tyler Green made some key plays, but he couldn’t have done that without his teammates communicating and playing hard.

“I did great today. I want to thank my teammates for running out there and communicating. We played hard all day and all spring. We work hard to get where we want to be. We are all in, and that is our motto,” Green said.

Rebowe believes that the crowd and atmosphere had a lot to do with their performance Saturday.
“We were really pleased with the crowd and the fans that came out. We are trying to put a good product on the field for them, and we are excited about it,” Rebowe said. “The guys noticed, and overall it was a great atmosphere.”

Junior quarterback Tuskani Figaro said the team did a good job overall this spring, and they are coming together as a group.

“I think we did a good job considering all of the circumstances we had. We still have a lot of room for improvement, as always. We did a good job with the four weeks of spring that we had,” Figaro said. “We are coming together better than we have done in the past. In the past we had our little cliques, but I think Coach Rebowe is bringing us together. He is helping us form a bond with each other and I feel that we are doing well with that.”

Even if the semester is coming to a close, Rebowe said they are focused because there is a lot of work to be done and is asking for the seniors to lead the way.

“We have some work to do heading in to fall camp. We are hitting the weight room for a couple of days, and then we will have spring break off. Then we will come back and finish up our last cycle before we head in to summer,” Rebowe said. “There is a lot more football to go and work to do. The guys are locked in and focused. They know the direction we want to go, and we are asking our seniors to lead the way.”
If you listen closely, you will hear music on the practice field. Rebowe brought the music to the Colonels to make practice entertaining.

“He came in with the music and we wanted it too. It helped us get into a certain rhythm and helps practice go by. It makes it entertaining; Usually its quiet and all you can hear is the conversations between one another,” Figaro said. “With the music on, you have people wanting to dance. It brings out more entertainment to the field.”
