Renee Piper, a Louisiana native, has been chosen director of University Relations and said it is imperative for the University to become more integrated into the community. Piper said her duties include leading and managing the staff by organizing events in the University Relations office, and she is learning the operations of her new surroundings.

“I’m spending my time right now learning university relations and listening a lot,” Piper said.

Nicholls began the search for a new director after the resignation of Michael Delaune on May 31, David Boudreaux, vice president of Institutional Advancement, said.

The qualifications for the position included a bachelor’s degree in mass communication or a related field, two years experience in a managerial or a supervisory role and experience in community relations and strategic planning, Boudreaux said.

Boudreaux said Piper was selected because she was the best match, and the interview team from Institutional Advancement was very impressed with her.

A graduate of Louisiana State University, Piper received a Bachelor of Science degree in merchandising.

She said she has worked for companies such as Harrah’s Casino in New Orleans where she designed and created the Harrah’s Grand Opening Campaign.

Piper said through this campaign she developed the Harrah’s New Orleans brand and identity.

“The job was very fast-paced and exciting,” Piper said.

Recently, Piper was employed at the South Louisiana Economic Council on the Nicholls campus where she was in charge of special events and planning and organized things such as community events, trade shows and meetings all geared towards the advancement of economic development in the region.

As director, Piper said she is sure changes will come after some time.

“I want to get to know the campus and understand how this department interacts with the University,” Piper said.

Piper said she enjoys the University because there is a rich culture and community atmosphere not found at many larger institutions.

“I think the University has much to offer, and I want to communicate that to the region,” Piper said.

Piper said she is excited about the opportunities awaiting her as director of University Relations and is proud to be a part of the Nicholls community.
