Homecoming calls for Colonel fans to “save the world”

This year’s homecoming festivities are right around the corner, getting the Colonels pumped up for the homecoming football game against Arkansas Tech University.
The theme for this year’s homecoming 2013 is “Colonels Save the World.” A committee made up of students representing all organizations on campus chose this theme after much brainstorming and voting.
“The theme was chosen with the mindset that the displays could show all types of heroes, big or small, and get creative,” Becky Durocher, director of admissions, said. Durocher is one of the co-chairs for homecoming planning, and she hopes that this will be a great week for all students and faculty.
On Sunday, Sept. 22, there will be a homecoming kick-off barbeque with a pep rally and homecoming court presentation beginning at 4 p.m. on the field between Acadia Drive and the Brady apartments. The barbeque is complete with a hot dog eating contest and entertainment by Snapper and the Fish Sticks. This event is free to all students and faculty and is sponsored by Alumni Affairs.
On Tuesday, Sept. 24, there will be pirogue races at 2 p.m. on the bayou side of Highway 1. Teams can sign up at the event. Later that day, Student Educators and Leaders will sponsor a flag football tournament at 6 p.m. at the fields near the Harold J. Callais Recreation Center. Sign- ups for teams begin at 5:30 that afternoon.
On Wednesday, Sept. 25, the homecoming displays will be judged and the student homecoming breakfast and dance will take place. All displays must be up by 10 a.m. The breakfast will be held from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. in Galliano Dining Hall. The dance will begin after breakfast in the Student Union Ballroom until midnight.
“During the breakfast, faculty and staff will be serving the students food as a long-standing tradition on campus,” Durocher said.
Thursday, Sept. 26, will be Alive at Five, sponsored by Student Programming Association, where Mia Borders and Ryan Cabrera will play in the tailgating area near Guidry Stadium at 5 p.m. This event is free to Nicholls students, faculty and staff with a Colonel Card. Fletcher students may pay $1 and show student ID to enter the event. Admission for community members is $5. The homecoming court will be introduced to the community once again at this event.
On Friday, Sept. 27, there will be a home soccer game at 4 p.m. against Abilene Christian. After the game, the College of Business alumni will hold a reception at 6 p.m. in the quad area at Powell/White Hall.
Finally, Saturday, Sept. 28, is game day. The alumni federation will be tailgating at 3 p.m. before the game. All students are welcome to attend.
“Other student organizations will be tailgating for the game as well,” Durocher said.
The Colonel Walk, a new event at Nicholls, will take place at 3:45 p.m. During this walk, the football players, cheerleaders and band will line up on Acadia Drive and walk into the stadium together with the Nicholls Nation organization cheering them on. There will be a pep rally taking place at 5 p.m. in the Alumni tailgate area right before the game. At 6 p.m., the Nicholls State Homecoming 2013 Game will begin against the Arkansas Tech University Wonder Boys.
“We are hoping that this year will be full of fun and excitement,” Durocher said. “Everyone needs to come out for the game to cheer on the Colonels.”
