Crawfish Day festivities to start at noon today

The Student Programming Association’s Crawfish Day will be held today in John L. Guidry Stadium from noon until 5 p.m. The SPA has spent $13,000 on this year’s Crawfish Day crawfish, a difference from the $8,600 they spent last year, due to the rise in the price of crawfish.

Bid requests were sent to different crawfish vendors in search of the best price. This year’s Crawfish Day crawfish will be coming from Heads and Tails.

“We have gotten the crawfish from them before,” Kayla Dupre, psychology sophomore from Krotz Springs and SPA standards and traditions committee head, said. “In fact, they supplied the crawfish last year. We bought 5,200 lbs. of crawfish, and, with that, came corn, potatoes, dip and containers.”

Crawfish Day is being paid for through the $25,000 SPA budget that is collected through the $15 student self-assessed fee for SPA. Students who carry seven or more hours pay the fee for SPA each semester that enables them to plan and hold events for Nicholls students.

For those who do not want to eat crawfish, there will also be hamburgers, hot dogs, popcorn, popsicles and lemon ice.

Though the crawfish are the main part of Crawfish Day, there will also be activities and music.

“We will have a couple of inflatables, a couple novelties, silly games, a DJ and maybe a few other things,” Dupre said.

Crawfish Day is a big event for Nicholls students for many reasons, whether it is their first Crawfish Day as a freshman, or their last as a senior.

“I’m expecting Crawfish Day to be something that just gives friends the chance to hang out and chill together before we face the stress of finals,” Meagan Price, freshman from Morgan City said. “I’m looking forward to hearing a set from DJ Quinn.”

Some students look forward to making their mark at this year’s Crawfish Day and hope to be a part of next year’s publicity.

“I’m very excited about my first Crawfish Day experience,” Mark Duhe’, freshman from Houma, said. “I’m most looking forward to having my picture taken for future Crawfish Day advertisements, so when people say, ‘What is Crawfish Day?’ they will show pictures and flyers with my picture on them. I see random pictures when people talk about Crawfish Day, and I would like to be in some for next year.”

Novelties at this year’s Crawfish Day will include homemade stress balls made from SPA balloons and flour as well as spin art.

“I am truly disappointed to say that I won’t be able to attend Crawfish Day because of class,” Virgilio Gurdian, business administration senior from Nicaragua, said. “I am actually debating skipping class, but it is the last week. I will definitely miss going out to the stadium and hanging out with my friends, playing in the inflatables, eating some good crawfish, and of course, having a few beers in the hot Louisiana weather.
