After troubles, SPA concert will happen

The Student Programming Association has, after some trouble with contracts and monetary issues, finally scheduled 112 to perform a concert tentatively scheduled for Nov. 28. In a time line prepared by Phyllis Leary, adviser for SPA, there are reasons why this semester’s production has taken some time.

The concert committee met on Aug. 8 to discuss a “wish-list” of performers that it would like to host. This wish-list, which consisted of nine different performers ranging from Fuel to Juvenile, was then sent to an agent at Concert Ideas. Concert Ideas is a website that helps the SPA to find performers to come and put on shows on campus.

Since this time, the SPA has been attempting to line up a performer that could commit to a price, date and also sign the proposed contract.

“The difficulty with concerts is that they ask for a large amount of money, and typically the only groups that will do college campuses are one hit wonders,” James Irwin, SPA publicity director, said.

Leary said, for example, to have the Dave Matthews Band, it costs up to $1 million per hour, and that does not include light shows, stage set up, travel and food for the performers.

“Now, we can put that on, but the student activity fee would have to be $150 per student,” she said.

Irwin said the bigger artists won’t touch a college campus.

“They are not interested in it; they think they are too good for it,” Lacey Callahan, SPA member, said.

Irwin said that students choose who the SPA will get to perform at a concert by conducting surveys. He said that the genre of music is chosen by what the survey results were. The final decision is made by the entertainment committee of the SPA, which calls the agent and tells him to get them artists in that genre of music within the SPA’s budget range.

According to the time line, out of the nine performers who were contacted, only three were considered just a “tight budget” production. The other six were noted as “too expensive.”

“Conflict in schedule; we can’t afford them. They don’t even call us back sometimes,” Leary said.

“Just because we want someone, and sometimes even if we can afford them, they can’t come because they have other things to do.”

On Aug. 31, the SPA faxed an offer to Juvenile, and the 14 page contract was accepted. However, on Sept. 18 the contract fell through due to “disagreements over contract stipulations.”

From Sept. 19 until Oct. 22, three performers were contacted, and 112 accepted the money offer of $30,000.

There are still many things that need to be done in order for the concert to take place. A few things listed on the time line are the printing of tickets, design and printing of t-shirts and posters and registering of stagehands.
