Depression common among college students

A variety of situational and medical factors can cause depression. Some cases of depression are a result of stress, low self-esteem, financial strain and feeling lonely or isolated.

According to University Counseling Services, in 2004, 44 students listed depression as their main reason for seeking counseling. Depression is among the most common emotional health issues facing college students. Fortunately, it is also among the easiest to treat.

Working hard to do well in classes can often cause stress and depression.

“There is pressure to be perfect,” Dana Rodrigue, registered nurse with University Health Services, said.

Other campus professionals agree.

“When students get more involved in classes for their majors, I have found that students become more aware but more uncertain about themselves,” Jizette Heims, counselor for University Counseling Services, said.

Students who are experiencing signs of depression can help to alleviate their symptoms.

“Students can make changes to lower stress by taking good physical care of themselves, getting proper rest and exercising regularly,” Rodrigue said. “Students should take care of their personal needs.”

Having strong self-esteem also helps when dealing with depression.

“Don’t dwell on the things you don’t do well, and focus on the things you’re good at,” Richard Abarr, freshman from Talisheek, said.

Having supportive family and friends can also help when working through feelings of depression.

Helping a friend to manage depression can also be a difficult task.

“Just let them know you care. Let them talk, and be a sympathetic listener,” Erin Ballantyne, freshman from Slidell, said.

Other students agree that having good friends can help when coping with depression.

“Try to get them out and socializing again. Listen and try to support their decisions, even if you don’t completely agree with them,” Kenny Schoen, history sophomore from Houma, said

In other situations depression can be caused by chemical imbalances in the brain which can lead to symptoms like crying spells, eating improperly, not sleeping or sleeping too much, upset stomach, muscle tension and withdrawing from family and friends.

Students who may be coping with depression should see a counselor, physician or psychologist if they experience extreme and persistent sadness for more than two weeks.

Many treatment options exist for those coping with depression. The condition can be alleviated with counseling and medication.

“When a student comes into the counseling center we do an intake interview. After that the client and the counselor will come up with a treatment plan to help the client deal with those issues,” Heims said.
