It is that time of year again in which I ask Nicholls students eight questions about student-athletes here at Nicholls.
This semester, I quizzed 20 students about Colonel student-athletes who represent Nicholls in Spring Sports. The students quizzed were of every race, sex, age and classification.
Out of 20 students, none turned in a perfect paper. 15 of the 20 scored below passing.
The eight questions and answers are placed below. The correct answers to the questions are in parenthesis.
1.) Which Colonels’ basketball player is nicknamed “Striker”? (Clifton Jones)
Nine students were correct.
One student said Ernest Porter.
Three students said Michael Jordan.
One student said Nicholls student Michael Childs.
2.) Which Lady Colonel softball player tossed a no-hitter against Ole Miss earlier this season? (Dionne Meier)
No students were correct.
One student said Lady Colonel Duffi Matherne.
One student said Nolan Ryan’s little cousin.
One student said tennis player Venus Williams.
Two students said Nicholls student Jim Conley.
3.) Which Colonels’ baseball player has a grandfather named “Fats” who played for the Brooklyn Dodgers? (senior outfielder Brad Dantonio’s grandfather is Fats Dantonio)
One student surprisingly got it right.
One student said senior pitcher Matt Overman.
One student said senior outfielder Bryan James.
Eight students said legendary baseball player Babe Ruth.
4.)Why is Lady Colonel sophomore basketball player Elrolica Chopito called “Chalupa” by her teammates? (because they had trouble pronouncing ‘Chopito’ when first meeting her.)
Four students were correct.
Nine students said because she likes eating at Taco Bell.
Two students said because of her Spanish heritage.
One student said because she can eat 10 tacos at one setting.
Four said because she has a lot of gas and spends hours on the toilet.
5.) Which Colonel track team member broke the school record in the triple jump and qualified for the NCAA regional in Columbus, Ohio later this year? (senior decathlete Andras Farkas)
Three students were correct.
One student said Matt Pantusa.
Two students said Farren Clark.
6.) Who is the Lady Colonels number one tennis player? (Jennifer Rodriguez)
One student was correct.
One student said Nathan Carter.
14 students said tennis player Serena Williams.
7.) Which Lady Colonels’ track member owns outdoor track and field records in the 3000, 5000 and 10000 meter runs? (Cassie Jones)
Three students was correct.
12 students said that long blonde-haired girl with blue eyes.
One said track and field legend and Olympic gold medalist Jackie Joyner Kersey.
8.) Which current Colonel basketball players were teammates at Lincoln High School in Port Arthur, Texas? (Larry Jones and Eric James)
Six students was correct.
One student said Rap duo Smilez and Southstar.
Two students said Larry Smith and John Escort.
Two said Larry James and Clinton Portis.
