Weeklong Homecoming festivities to begin Sunday

Sunday kicks off the weeklong Nicholls homecoming celebration.Jessica Harvey, assistant director of alumni affairs, encourages all Nicholls students to attend the events. Harvey said that student participation at the events will make the overall occasion more successful and fun.

The homecoming theme is “Tillou: Dancing through the Decades!” The theme is a reminder that this marks the first year that the campus is home to an updated Colonel Tillou mascot.

Sunday starts homecoming week with “Paint the town, campus and cars red,” beginning at 2 p.m. The on- and off-campus Nicholls community are encouraged to support the Colonels by displaying their Geaux Colonels signs, which are available at the Alumni House or at any local Chamber of Commerce, and by painting the doors of their businesses or homes to follow this year’s theme.

Monday, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Student Programming Association will sponsor various activities in the Bollinger Memorial Student Union. Immediately following, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., SEALS will host kickball on the flag football field.

Starting at noon on Tuesday, the student union will host the pep rally, where the Homecoming Court will be announced. This is sponsored by SPA, Student Government Association, Band and Cheerleaders.

Wednesday, students are invited to attend the Homecoming Breakfast and Dance in the Galliano Dining Hall and Student Union Ballroom, respectively, from 9 p.m. to midnight.

The Pirogue Race will be held on the bayou side, and Water Day will take place in the St. Thomas Aquinas Field from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday.

Many events are planned for Friday, starting with the Homecoming Golf Tournament at 8 a.m. at the Bayou Country Club. The cost is $100 for 18 holes of golf and a four-person scramble. Included in the fee are a complementary gift, golf cart, green fee, coffee, donuts, refreshments and food on the course and two tickets to the Homecoming Brunch and Reception.

At 6 p.m. the College of Business Administration Alumni Association Homecoming Social will occur at the College of Business Ponder Room & Courtyard. To RSVP, call (985) 448-4172 or e-mail [email protected] by Monday. A block party will also take place from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. in the tailgating area by the John. L. Guidry Stadium.

On Saturday the festivities begin with the annual homecoming parade at 10 a.m. The route will begin at the corner of Ordoyne and Acadia, turn on La. 1, turn right by the President’s Residence and end where it began. Clubs and organizations interested in participating must contact Tommy Ponson in Student Life at (985) 448-4531.

At 11 a.m. on Saturday, there will be a Homecoming Brunch, Reception and Pep Rally celebration under the big tent in the west side (press box side) stadium parking lot. The award presentation for the Golf Tournament, the introduction of Outstanding Alumnus/Alumna for each college and the Homecoming Court introduction will take place during that time as well. The Pep Rally with the Pride of Nicholls Band and Cheerleaders will begin at 2:15 p.m.

This is the first time the parade is being held on the same day as the football game. Harvey said this is important because students can spend all day having fun and keeping up the Colonels spirit.

Following the rally, the Nicholls Colonels will play the Jacksonville University Gamecocks at 3 p.m.
