Rookie quarterbacks compete for starting position

Nicholls State quarterbacks Jacob Witt and LaQuinton Caston have one thing in common. The two redshirt-freshmen will have to learn under-the-gun as quarterbacks for the Colonels.Witt and Caston shared playing time in the loss against Air Force. Witt went 5-8 with 48 yards and Caston went 2-5 with13 yards.

At Denton-Guyer High School, Witt accounted for 3,400 total yards of offense and 34 touchdowns and was named to the All-Area squad as a utility player his senior season. In 2007, Witt accumulated 1,800 yards on the ground.

At Scotlandville High School, Caston was named All-District in 2007 and participated in the Red Stick Bowl. Caston passed for over 1,200 yards and rushed over 600 yards his senior year, finishing the year with a total of eight touchdowns.

Q: What is your major?

Caston: “I major in general studies.”

Witt: “I also major in general studies.”

Q: Why did you come to Nicholls?

Caston: “I came because it’s only an hour away from home, and Nicholls gave me an opportunity to play quarterback.”

Witt: “Nicholls offered the only scholarship that would let me play quarterback.”

Q: Who is your favorite NFL player?

Caston: “My favorite is Mike Vick.”

Witt: “Adrian Peterson is my favorite.”

Q: What is your favorite food?

Caston: “I like crawfish and any kind of seafood.”

Witt: “I use to eat at this food place with my family that had grilled chicken with fried plantains on it. That’s my favorite food.”

Q: What is your favorite movie?

Caston: “‘American Gangster’ is my favorite movie.”

Witt: “My favorite is ‘Tombstone.'”

Q: What is your favorite television show?

Caston: “I don’t want to say a sports show like all the other players do, so I’ll say ‘Everybody Hates Chris.'”

Witt: “I used to love to watch ‘Rob and Big’ when it was on.”

Q: What kind of music do you listen to?

Caston: “I listen to R&B.”

Witt: “I listen to pretty much anything, but I listen to country the most.”

Q: What is your favorite thing to do off the field?

Caston: “I usually go to the mall.”

Witt: “I love to play golf.”

Q: Who is the better quarterback?

Caston: “Oh, it has to be Jacob.”

Witt: “I think Nolan Dumas is the best out of all of us.”

The Colonels’ next game is Saturday at 6 p.m. in Ruston against the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs.
